Welcome to the Set Free Sisterhood Podcast — where we ditch alcohol, heal deeply, and step into our God-given purpose. Hey Sister — let’s get honest. Are you tired of waking up at 3am with your heart racing, your mind spinning, and that pit in your stomach that whispers “What’s wrong with me?” You hide it well. You show up, you smile, you juggle all the things. But behind the scenes, you’re stuck in this cycle: Drink, regret, repeat. And deep down, you know it’s costing you — your peace, your purpose, your joy, and your connection with God. I’m Michelle Porterfield — a faith-fueled, no-nonsense coach who helps Christian women break free from the grip of alcohol, heal what’s underneath it, and create a life they actually want to wake up to. I’ve walked this road. I know the fear, the shame, and the lies the enemy loves to whisper. And I also know the freedom waiting for you on the other side. This podcast is your safe, faith-filled space to get real, do the work, and become the woman God created you to be — bold, healed, and completely set free. If you’re ready, let’s do this. One of the things that surprises women the most when they stop overdrinking is how loud their thoughts become.
They expect to feel peaceful.
Confident.
Free.
Instead, they often find themselves battling self-doubt, overthinking, anxiety, and harsh self-criticism.
And many start wondering if something is wrong with them.
Nothing is wrong with you.
What's happening is that you've removed one of your primary coping mechanisms.
For years, alcohol may have helped take the edge off difficult emotions. It created distance between you and the thoughts you didn't want to face.
At the end of a stressful day, instead of sitting with fear, disappointment, loneliness, insecurity, or overwhelm, you poured a drink.
The thoughts were still there.
You just didn't have to listen to them for very long.
When you stop drinking, those thoughts can feel louder because they're no longer being drowned out.
But here's what I want you to know:
Loud doesn't mean true.
Many of the thoughts that show up are not facts. They're protection.
Your brain's primary job is to keep you safe, not help you reach your full potential.
So when you're trying to make changes, your brain may offer thoughts like:
"You'll fail."
"People will judge you."
"You're not strong enough."
"Why even try?"
Those thoughts aren't necessarily truth.
They're often attempts to protect you from disappointment, rejection, embarrassment, or uncertainty.
One of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is:
"What is this thought trying to protect me from?"
That question creates space between you and the thought.
Instead of automatically believing it, you become curious about it.
As believers, we're reminded to take our thoughts captive because not every thought deserves our agreement.
God's truth is often very different from the fearful stories our brains tell us.
If you're in a season where your thoughts feel louder than ever, don't assume you're failing.
You may simply be becoming aware.
And awareness is the first step toward healing.
The thoughts may be loud.
But they don't get the final word.
Cheering you on,
Michelle
